Application Issues and Solutions for the Drill Bit

Drill bit tip wear


Reasons:


  • The workpiece will move downward under the action of the drilling force of the drill bit, and then rebound after the drill bit drills through.

  • The rigidity of the machine tool is insufficient.

  • The material of the PDC bit is not strong enough.

  • The PDC bit jumps too much.

  • The clamping rigidity is insufficient, and the drill bit slides.


Measures:


  • Reduce the cutting speed.

  • Increase the feed rate.

  • Adjust the cooling direction (internal cooling).

  • Add a chamfer.

  • Check and adjust the coaxiality of the drill bit.

  • Check if the back angle is reasonable.

Drill bit toughness belt breakage


Reasons:


  • The workpiece will move downward under the action of the drilling force of the PDC bit, and then rebound after the drill bit drills through.

Measures:


  • Choose a drill bit with a larger back cone.

  • Check the range of drill bit including hybrid drill bit jumping on the spindle (<0.02mm).

  • Use a pre-positioned center drill to make a top hole.

  • Use a hydraulic chuck with a rigid PDC bit with a neck sleeve or heat-shrinkage kit.


Drill bit built-up edge


Reasons:


Chemical reaction between cutting material and processed material (low carbon steel with high carbon content).


Measures:


  • Improve the lubricant and increase the content of oil or additives.

  • Increase the cutting speed, reduce the feeding rate, and reduce the contact time.

  • If drilling aluminum, use a surface-polished uncoated drill bit.


Drill bit breakage


Reasons:


  • The spiral groove of the PDC bit is blocked by cuttings and was not discharged in time.

  • When drilling a hole with a quick drill, the feed rate was not reduced or switched to manual feed mode.

  • When drilling brass and other soft metals, the back angle of the drill bit was too large but the front angle was not sharpened, causing the PDC bit to automatically rotate in.

  • The drill bit was ground too sharp, causing the edge to break, and the drill was not retracted quickly enough.


Measures:


  • Shorten the tool replacement cycle.

  • Improve the installation and fixing, such as increasing the supporting area and clamping force.

  • Check the spindle bearings and sliding grooves.

  • Use high-precision tool holders, such as hydraulic tool holders.

  • Use materials with stronger toughness.
